How to Use Abacus
Before beginning, the Abacus is “Cleared” by :
Tilting it up towards you with left hand, so all the beads drop down as shown in figure (A) Gently laying it flat on table
Running the right forefinger along the bar to push the upper beads to top as shown in figure (B)
With no bead touching the bar the Abacus now reads ‘Zero’. Beads values are calculated only when they touch the Bar.
How to Clear Abacus
Calculations normally begin with an empty or cleared abacus. Place the abacus flat on the table in front of you, then tilt the frame toward you as shown in figure (A). Gravity pulls all the beads down. At this point only the lower beads have been cleared away from the beam as shown in figure (A).
Now, place the abacus back onto the table and hold it with the left hand. Then, using the back of the right index finger, make a sweeping motion from left to right between the top of the beam and the bottom of the upper beads as shown in figure (B). This force the upper beads up away from the beam. When none of the rods shows any value, this is what is known as a cleared abacus.
